Can We Combine Senses to Create New “Super Senses” and Abilities?

چکیده
Bats see with their ears, snakes heat, horses can almost 360° around them, and crickets have super hearing abilities through legs. The development of these took 10’s 1,000’s years evolution. While astonishing sensory may sound like superpowers that only people in comic books have, new studies suggest that, by using technology perceptual learning, humans too could develop some awe-inspiring abilities—sometimes a small amount training!

Yes we can!? Annotating the senses of English modal verbs
This paper presents an annotation scheme for English modal verbs together with sense-annotated data from the news domain. We describe our annotation scheme and discuss problematic cases for modality annotation based on the inter-annotator agreement during the annotation. Furthermore, we present experiments on automatic sense tagging, showing that our annotations do provide a valuable training r...
متن کاملHow We Know Our Senses
I propose a new criterion by which, I hold, subjects recognize and distinguish their sensory modalities. I argue that, rather than appealing to one of the standard criteria (sense organ, proximal stimulus, phenomenal character, or representational content (Grice 1962, Macpherson 2011a)) or to O’Dea’s (2011) proprioceptive content, we need to introduce the criterion of location in the functional...
متن کاملTowards Binding Spanish Senses to Wordnet Senses through Taxonomy Alignment
This work tries to enrich the Spanish Wordnet using a Spanish taxonomy as a knowledge source. The Spanish taxonomy is composed by Spanish senses, while Wordnet is composed by synsets (English senses). A set of weighted associations between Spanish words and Wordnet synsets is used for inferring associations between both taxonomies.

One key dimension of the virtualization of the workplace is the formation of new types of partnerships where organizations let internal functions be handled by an external partner, the so-called outsourcing of services. The formation of an outsourcing partnership imposes the risk of knowledge-drainage on the client organization as specific internal competence decreases when the service provider...

Sensory organs are specialized to receive different kinds of input from the outside world. However, common features of their development suggest that they could have a shared evolutionary origin. In a recent paper, Niwa et al. show that three Drosophila adult sensory organs all rely on the spatial signals Decapentaplegic and Wingless to specify their position, and the temporal signal ecdysone t...
